Hall Conductivity Contributions to Striation Formation in Ionospheric Plasma Clouds.

Abstract

Hall conductivity contributions to ionospheric plasma cloud striation formation are calculated by considering the case where the ambient electric field is parallel to the equilibrium cloud density gradient and both are perpendicular to the geomagnetic field. The ambient electric field produces Hall currents in the cloud along the density perturbation (assumed perpendicular to the density gradient and magnetic field). Plasma Cloud-Background ionosphere coupling is included in the analysis. The growth rate of the instability is modified by the ratio of cloud Hall conductivity to cloud Pedersen conductivity compared with the case when the ambient electric field is perpendicular to the density gradient and only Pedersen conductivity contributions are considered.
