Allylic and Benzylic Type Organometallics.

Abstract

The report summarizes research results which include the following: When benzylmagnesium chloride is treated with dimethyl, diethyl and di-n-propyl sulfates as well as n-propyl tosylate, the principal product is always the alkylbenzene accompanied by smaller amounts of both ortho and para substituted toluenes; The role of sodium t-butoxide in metalations with n-amylsodium; The reactions of crotylmagnesium bromide with ethyl isopropyl, diisopropyl, isopropyl t-butyl and di-t-butyl ketone were examined under carefully controlled conditions; and The reaction of both the crotyl Grignard and lithium reagents with hindered ketones like di-t-butyl and t-butyl isopropyl are reversible.
