The Oxidation Mechanism of Zirconium.

Abstract

The report summarizes the research conducted in a study of the oxidation mechanism of zirconium. Abstracts of two papers are included. One involved measurement of oxygen diffusion in zirconia by means of 18O exchange between gaseous oxygen enriched in the isotope and microspheres of zirconia which had been equilibrated in some predetermined oxygen pressure. The other paper involved measurement of electrical conductivity and transfer numbers as a function of partial pressure (i.e., stoichiometry). (Author)
