Far Infrared Molecular Laser Research.

Abstract

The report describes research on the laser line assignments and excitation mechanism by glow discharges in the molecules SO2, H2S, and H2O. All 10 laser lines in SO2 have been assigned to the Nu(1), 2Nu(2) levels and an analytical model of the indirect excitation via an electronic state is described. A definitive assignment of laser lines in H2S at the moment appears to require better spectroscopic energy level data on the molecule. A convincing proof that the lines in H2O are excited by direct electron impact is presented along with an analytical model for computing the output laser line waveform. A final section on some preliminary studies of transverse excitation of far infrared lasers is described. (Author)
