Data Validation Handbook.

Abstract

A data validation handbook detailing data editing and validating techniques and their theoretical bases is presented in this final technical report. The handbook consists of essentially four parts: the first (Section 1.0) is the introductory part; the second part (Sections 2.0 and 3.0) discusses the organizing of information on system variates and of a dictionary of deterministic tests; the third part (Sections 4.0, 5.0, 6.0, 7.0, and 8.0) develops measures of likelihood of error in data; and the fourth and last part of the handbook (Sections 9.0, 10.0, and 11.0) deals with the system aspects of the control and correction of data. An illustration of applying the data validation techniques to a real data system, the Navy ASW Formatted Message Reporting System, is documented in a supplement to this report. (Author)
