Response of the Delta Test to Specimen Variables.

Abstract

The Delta specimen was applied to two different heats of A517 grade steel in one inch plate thickness and to the one heat in 1/2 and 2 inch plate thickness. Various modifications of the basic specimen were investigated, a non-standard geometry and a composite form of the specimen into which different steel types were incorporated. The influences of various welding procedures were examined as well as the performance of all steels in the non-welded condition. The specimen was found applicable and appropriate for all conditions tested, showing sensitivity to all variables. At the same time the specimen showed a consistency in behavior which could be rationalized with commercial experience and data from corollary tests. The steels examined showed several transitional behaviors when tested as weldments, these transitions occurring in place of fracture, length of fracture, load carrying changes and overall ductility measured by deflection at failure.
