Parameter Plane Design of Complex Zero Compensators.

Abstract

Control systems affected by mechanical or structural resonances contain at least one pair of complex poles in their corresponding transfer functions. The effect of the complex poles is to introduce resonance peaks which may cause instability in the closed-loop system. Such systems may be stabilized by the use of cascade compensators containing one pair of complex zeros. The use of a parameter plane analysis, using a function of the location of the complex zeros as the two variables, in determining the correct location of the zeros of the compensator to guarantee stability and to ensure a desired transient response in the compensated system is illustrated. As a result of the investigation of a number of systems affected by resonance phenomena using parameter plane techniques, design criteria for cascade complex zero compensators, based upon the interpretation of the 'stable region' of the parameter plane, are presented.
