Synthesis of Virus-Specific Proteins in Cells Infected with Venezuelan Equine Encephalomyelitis Virus,

Abstract

The use of polyacrylamide jells has facilitated the investigation of virus-specific proteins both in the form of virions and in cells infected by the virus. This method has made possible the separation of virus-specific proteins of the polio-virus and the Semliki Forest virus. The polyacrylamide jell method was employed in the present study to investigate porteins synthesized in cells infected with Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis virus. It has been shown previously that synthesis of cell protein was greatly suppressed in cells of checken fibroblasts infected with this virus and treated with actinomycin D. Comparison of electrophoregrams led to the conclusion that at least two of four proteins synthesized three and six hours following cell infection are virus specific. It is possible that they are two different proteins synthesized during the first three hours following infection and not formed at a later stage of the infection.
