Memorandum Regarding James B. Eads' Contribution to the Design of Tidal Inlets,

Abstract

The original report (1878) of Captain James B. Eads 'Improvement at the Mouth of the St. Johns River' is reporduced with an introduction 'Memorandum Regarding James B. Eads' Contribution to the Design of Tidal Inlets' by M. P. O'Brien. O'Brien's appraisal regards the report as being of value to coastal engineering, and says 'Eads went beyond general principles to a quantitative relationship between tidal prism and throat area which is in agreement with measurements elsewhere....' Eads stated a number of general principles regarding tidal inlets which subsequent experience has shown to be valid. (Author)
