IR Stars: Search for 3.5-mm Radiation and Tentative Detection of VY CMa,

Abstract

A search has been made for 3.5-mm radiation from twelve IR stars with strong 10-micron radiation. The sources VY CMa and IRC + 10216 were tentatively detected with 3.5-mm fluxes of 0.2 plus or minus 0.07 (sigma) f.u. and 0.4 plus or minus 0.2 f.u., respectively. The IRC + 10216 result is consistent with a measurement by Kellermann and Pauliny-Toth. If the 3.5-mm radiation comes from an optically thick circumstellar region having the IR temperature of 600 degrees K, this region would have a linear dimension of about 100 a.u. (Author)
