Theater Logistics Control Center.

Abstract

The US Army Advanced Materiel Concepts Agency convened an ad hoc working group (AHWG) 1-5 February 1971 to summarize previous AHWG's on logistics command and control and to develop an integrated technological and doctrinal concept of a theater-level control center. The 26 participants from various Government agencies, industry, and a university were divided into four panels to discuss: data acquisition, communications, logics and memories (computers), and computer-associated displays. The report describes the findings of the panels. Management techniques and decision-making processes are analyzed. Computer and display technology are described, emphasizing the hardware and software necessary to give the commander and his staff continuous, realtime visibility of all of his resources so as to achieve true 'inventory in motion.' An approach to data acquisition is presented which emphasizes the need to organize and train units specifically to perform the difficult functions of broad-spectrum sensor installation, data collection, and preliminary analysis and conversion of data to an optimum transmission format. Finally, the report discusses the technology of communications, listing research and development requirements. (Author)
