Tanker Mooring Site Survey Equipment.

Abstract

Report covers the development of tanker mooring site survey equipment by USAMERDC, which is also developing a lightweight mooring system for tankers utilizing explosively embedded anchors (EEA's). Unlike a conventional anchor, the EEA cannot be readily reused should it fail to hold due to emplacement in an ocean sub-bottom having low shear strength. If EEA's are to be adapted for tanker mooring sites, the Military must develop the means for locating suitable mooring sites and for determining any potentially dangerous underwater obstructions within a few hours, using lightweight air transportable equipment. Various oceanographic survey methods were investigated, and contracts were awarded for an EG and G International Mark I Dual Channel Side Scan Sonar and High Resolution Seismic Sub-Bottom Profiling Equipment and for a Magnavox Explosive Embedment Penetrometer System. This equipment was tested and found to have potential for military use. The report concludes that: (a) The Explosive Penetrometer System was tested under optimum conditions, sub-bottom penetration needs to be increased and the system must be tested under more adverse sea conditions; (b) The electronic survey equipment was tested under optimum conditions; equipment has potential for mooring site surveys, but more testing of the equipment and experience in reading and evaluating the graphic data is required to complete its evaluation and to establish firm performance and training requirements.
