Circulating Electrolyte Fuel Cell Powerplant.

Abstract

The technical feasibility of a hydrogen-air circulating alkaline electrolyte fuel cell system incorporating electrolyte regeneration capability has been demonstrated. The fuel cell design features four channels on the air side through which the potassium hydroxide electrolyte flows. The feasibility of this cell design was demonstrated by a 650 hour single cell test. The electrochemical regenerator cells convert carbonates in the liquid electrolyte into potassium hydroxide and carbon dioxide and rejects the carbon dioxide. Single cell regenerator rig tests have demonstrated 200 hours operating capability with adequate carbon dioxide rejection rates. A breadboard 425 watt fuel cell powerplant was constructed consisting of a cell product water removal in a packaged configuration. The cell stack included 22 fuel cells and 2 regenerator cells.
