Determination of Poisson's Ratio for Various Glass Systems.

Abstract

Calculation of Poisson's ratio from measurements of Young's modulus and the shear modulus were made on various glass samples. These were made in the form of rods using the hypodermic syringe method. This involved drawing molten glass into vitreous silica tubing. The effect of the physical dimensions of the rod on moduli values is given, and corrected formulae are also presented. Results for Young's modulus measured in the transverse and longitudinal modes of excitation are presented together with the shear modulus as measured in the torsional mode. (Author)
