Polymeric Systems Which Expand on Polymerization for Use in High Strength Composites.

Abstract

Among the monomers that give some expansion on polymerization is the spiro ortho ester, 1,4,6-trioxaspiro(4,4)-nonane. When polymerization of this monomer was carried out in a dilatometer at 25 deg., the meniscus rose during the polymerization to give a final expansion at 95% conversion of 0.14%. The polymer, which had the expected analysis and spectra, has a molecular weight of about 25,000. Thus, the principle that bicyclic monomers can be prepared that will polymerize with expansion has been clearly demonstrated. (Author)
