Research on Zircon Polarizers.

Abstract

Experiments on the growth of zircon (ZrSiO4) were continued using the hydrothermal method. AKF-LiF mineralizer has been the only acceptable solution found to produce good quality growth. Small hydrothermal runs have been made to evaluate pressure-temperature conditions with various concentrations of this mineralizer which are conducive to good growth. Temperatures in excess of 600C are found to promote growth, but the materials available for autoclave fabrication drastically limit the pressure-temperature conditions attainable. Larger hydrothermal runs show (100) planes to be fast growing but growth rates faster than 0.002 inch/day have not been obtained between 550-600C. The use of a more concentrated mineralizer indicates that high quality growth can be obtained. (Author)
