Thermal Expansion Behavior of a Thermally Degrading Organic Matrix Composite. Simple Degradation of Matrix.

Abstract

The thermal expansion behavior of a material undergoing a one-stage chemical degradation with accompanying shrinkage is discussed. It is shown that once the material parameters associated with the reaction kinetics are specified, the thermal expansion behavior, at arbitrary heating rates, can be determined. An example is given of a heated halfspace, and significant departures from expansion values obtained at uniform heating rates are noted. (Author)
