Types of Interactions in Space-Time Periodic Media.

Abstract

The interaction regions between two successive modes in a space-time periodic medium (i.e., epsilon, N = epsilon sub o epsilon sub r, N sub o(1+alpha sub 1f(Kz-omega t)) where f(xi) is a periodic function) are studied. Geometrical criteria to determine the type of the interactions (stop-band, passive, amplifying or self-oscillating) from the (alpha sub 1 tends to o) Brillouin diagram are derived by using a first order Taylor series development in alpha sub 1. These criteria are applied to the cases of sinusoidally space-time periodic dielectric, plasma and uniaxial plasma; then the criteria are generalized for the case of generally space-time periodic media.
