Low Shear Mixing.

Abstract

A low shear mixing process and two propellant formulations were selected. The selected process consists of a combination of the desirable features of two propellant manufacturing concepts; the Batch Inert Diluent Process, and the Solid Phase Mixing Process. Process steps include mixing propellant in a diluent, pelletizing and freezing the propellant, diluent removal from the frozen pelletized propellant, vacuum casting, and subsequent pressure cure. Preliminary equipment design tests were conducted to confirm basic design criteria. Laboratory tests utilizing the binder system of the selected propellants and candidate diluents were performed to verify processibility and safety characteristics of the system. (Author)
