Proton Activated Recession Sensor (PARS). Volume 1.

Abstract

The program was conducted to study the feasibility of using proton activation techniques to provide an in situ line source of radioactivity in ATJ-S graphite for application to the measurement of rates of recession on a graphite nosetip during reentry. The Be7 produced by high energy protons (E>28MeV) in a graphite targets emits monoenergetic gamma radiation (E = 0.48MeV). These gamma rays are detected and counted as a function of reentry time to monitor recession of the nosetip. (Author)
