On the Accuracy of Estimating Averages Over Geographic Areas,

Abstract

A method for determining the probable errors of calculated area averages of meteorological elements is presented by the author. By using the so-called structural function of the stochastic field of the investigated element, the probable error of the estimated area average is expressed in functions of network-density and that of the respective area of averaging. The method is demonstrated by calculations concerning the accuracy of estimated area average rainfall depth. (Author)
