Optimal Probing of the Atmosphere.

Abstract

An investigation has been performed of the fluctuations of cloud radiance at 5400A as a function of cloud type and field of view of the receiving system. The fluctuations are observed to increase with nonuniformity of cloud structure and also with decreasing field of view. The ratio of the root mean square fluctuations of the cloud radiance to the mean value of the radiance was normally less than .005. Power spectra of the fluctuations are presented for cirrus, cumulus and altostratus cloud types. (Author)
