Molecular Phenomena in H20 Systems. II. The Dielectric and Mechanical Response of Ice I(h) Single Crystals and Its Interpretation.

Abstract

In 'pure' Ice I(h) single crystals, seven discrete relaxation spectra can be identified in the frequency range from 0.008 to 100,000 Hz. The experimental determination of the molecular origin of the standard spectra was the main theme of the investigation. The evidence is provided by the magnitude and temperature dependence of relaxation time and polarization contribution of the various spectra and the influence of imperfections, multicrystallinity and of HF doping on these characteristics. In addition, the correlation between mechanical and electrical relaxation phenomena was investigated and the action of outer and inner crystal boundaries. (Author)
