A Content Analysis of the Narrative Sections of Navy Performance Evaluations for Senior Enlisted Personnel.

Abstract

A content analytic pilot study was performed of the narrative sections of Navy performance evaluations for senior enlisted personnel in pay grade E7 in order to determine if it is possible to differentiate between the performance of average and outstanding chief petty officers based on the substantive content of Evaluation Reports. The results support the hypothesis that narrative performance evaluations do contain information useful to personnel selection boards in discriminating between typical and superlative chief petty officers.
