Measurement of the Oblateness of the Disk of the Sun.

Abstract

The report covers the period March 1, 1970 through August 31, 1971 within which construction at the University of Massachusetts of a new instrument for the measurement of the solar oblateness was initiated and completed. Initial operation of the instrument commenced in May, 1971 and the first summer season was devoted to perfecting the telescope and its associated control electronics. A review of the current theoretical status of the oblate sun is contained herein, including discussion of the significance of some recent experimental results apparently inconsistent with a significant solar mass quadrupole moment. A description of the characteristics of the new instrument and a summary of the first summer of operation are also included. (Author)
