The Influence of Surface Active Contamination on the Interaction between Wind and Waves.
Abstract
The well-known effect of the use of oil to reduce the wave disturbance on a water surface is examined starting from a historical viewpoint, and the considerable uncertainty about the mechanisms involved is emphasized. Using a moire fringe observation technique, the wind-induced disturbance of water surfaces was monitored. Some disturbance was measured over the whole range of wind velocity, no evidence of a 'critical' velocity being found. Turbulent mixing of the surface layers was found when the surface response reached a certain level. (Author)
