Development and Test of a Rocket Launched Automatic Ocean Upper Air Data Acquisition System.

Abstract

A prototype system, called NOWEB, was developed and tested for the automatic acquisition of ocean upper air data by means of rocketsondes launched by the 2.75-inch FFAR (Folding Fin Aircraft Rocket) from a floating platform. The Navy's NOMAD Buoy was employed as the launch platform and the NOWEB subsystem permitted the modified NOMAD to acquire and transmit---automatically---meteorological surface data, ocean information and upper air data. Full scale system tests were conducted on Lake Superior followed by tests in the ocean environment at the Pacific Missile Range. (Author)
