Use of Mossbauer Effect in Chemistry.
Abstract
The report is concerned with the theoretical understanding of the Mossbauer parameters and the bonding of haemoglobin. The investigation has brought out a completely new concept about the biological role of haemoglobin. In particular it appears that the oxidation state is more realistically taken as iron(II) rather than iron(III). A new reaction has been discovered in the recrystallisation of alumino-silicates to form mullite. In the course of the reaction metal ions diffuse to the surface of the crystal; and an alumino-silicate is formed with the same stoichiometry as that formed in the heating of clay to form mullite in pottery manufacture, but it appears to have different structure. In addition, magnetic investigations of Mossbauer spectra led to an understanding of the role of spin pairing of electrons both in covalent and ionic compounds. (Author)
