Flash Heating - Technique for Oxidation Studies of Metals.
Abstract
Flash heating utilizes the electromagnetic energy of a high-intensity light pulse for fusion and vaporization of metals. The resultant system can be analyzed photographically for investigation of kinetic and thermodynamic properties. Also, the system may be examined spectrophotometrically for elucidation of the gaseous products and their lifetime. A brief review of the previous studies has revealed that a variety of systems can be studied by the technique. The technique appears to be most promising in the study of corrosion of metals under conditions approximating those of the gun tube in its firing mode. A few experiments on rapid high temperature oxidation of metals are described. (Author)
