A Summary of Ecologically Related Cholinesterase Investigations at Edgewood Arsenal, Maryland: 1967-1971.

Abstract

Test Area Ecology program personnel investigated seasonal cholinesterase trends and other sources of normal variation of this enzyme in specific tissues of selected wildlife species in the vicinity of Edgewood Arsenal, Maryland. This information on normal levels provided (1) the basis for rapid and accurate evaluation of increased wildlife mortality where Edgewood Arsenal might be a suspect, and (2) the capability of using confined wildlife and domestic species to detect and monitor the presence of anticholinesterases near storage facilities and, if agent field testing resumes, in the vicinity of the Carroll Island test area. This report describes the progress of these investigations from September 1969 to April 1971. A modified automated thiocholine procedure was used to measure normal cholinesterase values for brain tissue of three species of fish, three species of birds, and one mammal and the muscle tissue of the blue crab. Limited data were accumulated on seven additional animals. (Author)
