Ignition and Combustion of Delays. Part I. Thermoanalytic Study of the SI 143 Delay Composition.

Abstract

A detailed thermoanalytic study was performed on the SI-143 delay composition, which consists of 58% Zr, 25% MoO3, 16% Cr2O3, and 1% organic binder. DTA and x-ray diffraction analyses of the Zr/MoO3 mixture revealed the main reaction. Increasing the particle size of the zirconium decreases the rate of the first stage reaction. Zirconium hydride, an impurity in the zirconium, reduces the exothermicity of the Zr/MoO3 reaction. Chromium sesquioxide influences the second stage exotherm of the Zr-MoO3 reaction. The organic binder initially degrades to a carbon ash which aids in the ignition process.
