A Method for Rapid Computation of VLF, Steep-Incidence Reflections from the Ionospheric D-Region.

Abstract

A method for the rapid computation of coefficients for vlf reflections from the ionospheric D-region is described. Previously calculated wave-field solutions are used to compute reflection coefficients for new electron-density profiles. The usefulness of the method is demonstrated by a study of several D-region profiles. The study shows the sensitivity of the reflection coefficients to small changes in the profiles. Experience indicates that three to six times as many profiles can be examined in a parametric study than was previously possible for a given computer cost. The resulting increase in computational speed greatly facilitates parametric studies of electron-density profiles. (Author)
