Arctic Logistics Support Technology

Abstract

The document is a summary report of a symposium held to identify, examine, and propose better ways of providing support to ARPA's research efforts in the Arctic Basin. ARPA's interests in the Arctic were identified to focus on mobility, undersea operations and information gathering. Important technologies were said to include such things as surface effect vehicles, under-ice acoustics, remote sensing, and cold region construction. It was emphasized that the ARPA arctic research program is an integral part of the total national arctic program. Papers were presented that described both the current state of the art for arctic logistics support technology and projected future development. They were divided into three main subject areas: (1) transportation, (2) life support, and (3) activity support, i.e., meeting special needs of field investigators in performance of their activities.
