The In Situ Formation of Germanium Thin Films.

Abstract

A novel method was discovered for forming thin films of germanium on oxygen-deficient glasses prepared from germanium dioxide. It appears that the potential exists for developing films with amorphous or crystalline character. The best results are obtained when the surface of the original glass is ground and polished before treatment in a hydrogen environment. An effort is made to assess the thin film formation in terms of chemical bond variations that are postulated to exist in oxygen-deficient germanium-oxygen glasses. (Author)
