Role of Carbon Dioxide in Photosynthesis and Nitrate Metabolism in 'Chlorella pyrenoidosa'.

Abstract

The study examines the effect of nitrate and nitrite on light saturation curves during photosynthesis in Chlorella pyrenoidosa. Neither nitrate nor nitrite appreciably affected the light intensiy required to reach saturation, but both nitrogen sources increased the maximum oxygen evolution obtained at light intensities above saturation. These results were interpreted as additional photochemical activity due to the photoreduction of nitrate and nitrite. At light intensities below light saturation, oxygen evolution due to carbon dioxide reduction was about 8% lower in the presence of nitrite than with nitrate or carbon dioxide alone. Carbon dioxide concentration curves at light saturation demonstrated that light in the absence of carbon dioxide had little effect on nitrate uptake, but greatly enhanced the uptake of nitrite.
