Ozone: A Synopsis of its Measurement and Use as an Atmospheric Tracer.

Abstract

The purpose of the paper is to present in concise form a readily available reference of ozone for use in atmospheric physics research. The physical properties of ozone are discussed with emphasis primarily on its absorption characteristics. Methods of measuring ozone both directly and indirectly are given in detail. The secondary peak of ozone at 40 km that has been measured at White Sands Missile Range is presented. Regener sondes and Mast electrochemical sondes are compared, and the Mast equipment is expounded. Ozone is shown to be a good natural atmospheric tracer. Several possibilities are suggested for future research using ozonesondes. (Author)
