Determination of Mechanical Properties of Materials at High Cyclic Loading and Elevated Temperatures.
Abstract
Preliminary developmental work was performed to devise a method of determining material properties of gun tube materials subjected to the high cyclic rate loading and the elevated temperatures that exist in automatic weapons firing. A single-shot test fixture, consisting of a modified gun that exerted high hydraulic pressures in a specimen with a 3 to 1 differential piston, was designed, built, and tested. Results with this low-temperature, single-shot fixture for pressures of 62,000 psi are presented. An improved multi-shot gun fixture consisting of a Browning caliber .50 M2 machine gun (with the material specimen replacing a portion of the barrel) has been developed through the initial stages of testing. With live rounds, single-shot pressures of 55,000 psi with .1 millisecond rise times and pulse widths of 2 milliseconds were generated; these results are presented. (Author)
