The Mechanical Design and Instrumentation of a Floating Stable Oceanographic Research Platform.

Abstract

The Naval Postgraduate School plans to erect a floating stable oceanographic research platform in 240 ft. of water in Monterey Bay during the spring of 1972. The platform will use a multi-point mooring system and will have a minimum of five tons reserve buoyancy and a total weight of 11 tons. The criteria for selecting an optimum location for the platform are discussed and a selection is made based on a compromise of the various considerations. It is concluded that the best source of power should be a submarine cable from the shore because of the five year minimum life expectancy of the platform. The initial set of permanently installed sensors should include instruments to measure basic parameters in the areas of Meteorology, Oceanography and Ocean Engineering. (Author)
