Recirculatory Flow Visualization in Helicopter Flight Modes.

Abstract

The classical working states of the airscrew were studied employing the three-dimensional flow visualization tunnel at the Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, California. The various states were simulated in an attempt to gain insight into some of the present problem in ehelicopter rotor design. This method was extended to include two particular phenomena, the critical part of the vortex ring state and Mangler's distribution of induced velocity about a rotor in the helicopter mode. Using a feasible distribution ascertained from the flow visualization, the induced velocity distribution was calculated for several points in the vortex ring state. (Author)
