Transportation Systems and Dual Purpose Blast Shelters.

Abstract

A first step toward a full blast shelter oriented civil defense program could involve a change in priority of selection of existing shelters. The design of structures to be built for new or expanded transportation facilities in and around the major cities could be modified at small cost and provide additional blast shelters. Such shelters would include stations and tunnels of rapid transit system, underground garages, highway and railway tunnels and the abutment of the interchange and grade separations of interstate highways. The study evaluates the availability of these types of shelters to the population of major cities. (Author)
