Preparation and Properties of Rare-Earth Compounds

Abstract

Preparation, characterization, and physical properties of rare-earth compounds of technological potential are described. Work was in the areas of magneto ferroelectric materials and of narrow-band narrow-gap semiconductors. In the former area, the primary objective was to develop a simultaneously ferroelectric and ferromagnetic device element operating in a useful temperature range. Solid solutions of rare-earth manganites, chromites, and ferrites have been the main object of investigation. Narrow-band narrow-gap semiconductors undergoing purely electronic semiconductor-to-metal transitions are of considerable practical and fundamental interest. The transitions investigated were the pressure-induced ones in the Sm chalcogenides. Work is continuing on solid solutions of similar composition. Some of these materials display strong white cathodoluminescence.
