Development of Lightweight Plastics Cartridge Case.

Abstract

The report is the second in a series on the development of reinforced plastics cartridge cases for the 105mm howitzer. It covers the first evaluations of cases assembled by the Naval Ordnance Laboratory from plastics sidewalls and metal bases procured from industry. In two different firing tests, it was shown that a lightweight plastics cartridge case is technically feasible. However, there remain certain adhesive joint problems which require further study.
