The Mathematical Analysis of Fluid Viscosity Data.

Abstract

The report describes a process for analyzing and summarizing fluid viscosity data over extended temperature ranges. Viscosity data for 34 synthetic turbine engine lubricants were obtained over the temperature range 100 to 500F; for several of the fluids, which are thermally stable, this range was extended to 700F. Conventional methods are inadequate for handling and describing viscosity data over such extended ranges. It has been found that two empirical relationships correctly predict the variation of fluid viscosity with temperature. A computer program was used to perform least-squares analyses of the data; the treatment yields values for the parameters that give the best fit to the experimental data. Derivations of the least-squares equations are given for the two formulas, together with the computer program and the results of the data analysis. (Author)
