Infrared Spectral Shifts and Enthalpy Measurements.
Abstract
A study of the hydrogen bonding interaction of phenol with some aromatic amine oxides was investigated by both calorimetric and spectroscopic measurements. The equilibrium constants for the hydrogen bond formation were measured for 22 complexes using the first overtone of the O-H stretching frequency. Good agreement was found between these constants and those measured calorimetrically by using different acid-base ratios. Similar values were found for the O-H vibration relationship for the phenol adducts in both CH2Cl2 and CCl4. Only hydrogen bonding interactions which result in enthalpies ranging from 5 - 9 kcal/mole can be calculated from the linear equation. (Author)
