Development of a Lightweight Balloon to Carry a Payload of 50 Pounds at an Altitude of 160,000 Feet.
Abstract
The contract was for the development of two lightweight balloons to carry a load of 50 pounds each at an altitude of 160,000 feet. The final balloon design was approved by AFCRL after some initial modifications. Included in the design was an auxiliary 'stub' duct which will be used for a quick, controlled descent of the balloon. The StratoFilm balloon gores were sealed with a newly-designed precision band-sealer, specially developed to provide a high quality seal for very thin film materials. In addition, a 40 foot long tube using the same material as used for the balloon was made for each balloon. The balloons were fabricated, boxed with their respective tubes, and shipped on 30 July 1971 to Holloman AFB, New Mexico. (Author)
