Free-Ion Energy Levels of Triply Ionized Thulium Including the Spin-Spin, Orbit-Orbit, and Spin-Other-Orbit Interactions,

Abstract

The energy levels of triply ionized thulium have been calculated for a number of reported parameters characterizing the spin-orbit and coulomb interaction using total angular momentum states of the 4f12 configuration. For typical values of these parameters, it is shown that severe term mixing occurs. The effects of the spin-spin, orbit-orbit, and spin-other-orbit interactions on the free ion levels are also investigated. It is further shown that the inclusion of all three latter interactions, with the exception of the contact term of the spin-spin interaction, adds only three parameters to the coulomb and spin-orbit parameters.
