Slender-Cone, Zero Angle of Attack Drag in Continuum and Noncontinuum Flow,

Abstract

The principal results of a study of the low denstiy drag of sphere cones are reported, consisting of drag measurements on three configurations at Mach numbers above 22, ranging well into the near free molecular regime, and an extensive correlation of available zero angle of attack drag data from ground facilities based on the viscous interaction parameters of the Mirels-Ellenwood analysis. A recommendation is made, subject to flight test data analysis for typical slender RV applications.
