Effect of Swirl on Conical Diffuser Performance,

Abstract

The report deals with an experimental investigation of the effect of swirl on conical diffuser performance. Data on the gross performance of conical diffusers are reported. The effect of swirl on the separation phenomena in a conical diffuser has been studied. Success has been achieved in avoiding the separation completely through swirl in conical diffusers of a divergence angle as large as 35 degrees. An optimum swirl angle has been found for each diffuser. Turbulence level measurements are taken and they indicate that turbulence is not a dominant factor in eliminating separation. (Author)
