Studies of the Formation and Decay of Triplet States of Aromatic Molecules.

Abstract

Experimental techniques for measuring fluroescence, phophorescence and triplet quantum yields for organic molecules in rigid plastic media as a function of temperature were developed. Comprehensive sets of data were obtained for pyrene, coronene, 1,2-benzocoronene and 1,12-benzperylene. The florescence yields of 18 aromatics were observed in absorption using the new technique of nonosecond laser photolysis ane spectroscopy. The effects of H-banding were studied in several aza-aromatics. The data obtained were used to draw conclusions relevant to the theory of radiationless transitions. Finally an experimental technique for pico-second laser photolysis and spectroscopy was developed and used to observe inverse Raman spectra of several molecules and a new subnanosecond transient absorption in the dye laser molecule, Rhodamine-6G.
