The Augmented-Catalog Console for Project Intrex. Part II.
Abstract
The Project Intrex augmented-catalog program consists of a set of experiments to determine how the traditional library catalog combined with an on-line computer system can provide library users with a more powerful, comprehensive, and useful guide to library resources. Part II completes the description of the display-console system specifically designed for the Intrex augmented-catalog experiments. The system consists of several user consoles that are connected to a buffer/controller containing a drum memory and a small digital computer. The buffer/controller in turn is connected by communications lines to a time-shared computer that stores the augmented-catalog data base and retrieval software. The user console has an alphanumeric, refreshed-CRT display which is maintained by the drum memory in the buffer/controller, a typewriter keyboard, mechanical function switches with fixed and dynamically programmable labels, and a light pen. The buffer/controller computer allows the user to do simple operations on the displayed data without recourse to the time-shared computer, thus relaxing the demands on the time-shared computer and its communication lines.
